Welcome to Mr. Gossel’s Social Studies Page!

Dear Grade 7 and 8 Parents,

Welcome back to school! I hope you all have had a great summer vacation and were able to enjoy the season together with your families.

My name is Dan Gossel, and I will be the Social Studies teacher for TYIS Grades 7 and 8 this year. This will be my first year at TYIS, but I am very excited to get to know everyone and I look forward to a great school year together!

I will be posting updates about various topics, such as lesson content, events, projects, and so on, throughout the year so please check in from time to time!

For my first post, I would like to introduce myself and talk a little bit about my vision for this school year.

I am from a small town in the state of Ohio in the United States, a place quite different from Tokyo! I graduated with a B.A. in History from Ohio University and completed my teacher training program at Humboldt State University in California. There I taught world history at the middle school level until I decided to take a leap and try living and working abroad. I came to Japan in 2014 as part of the JET Programme in Miyagi Prefecture. I initially only intended to stay in Japan for a year or two before returning to the United States, but during my time in rural Tohoku I fell in love with the country and developed a passion for learning about Japan’s language, history, and culture. I am excited to be a part of international education in Japan and I aim to spark a lifelong love of social studies among the students here at TYIS.

I am married and live with my wife, Kiyoe, in Chiba. Some of our shared hobbies include taking road trips through the countryside by car, and our love of Japanese professional baseball (Go Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles!). Among my other hobbies are Japanese study, reading, visiting hot springs, goshuin seal collecting, and trying new foods from as many regions and countries as I can!

I will be responsible for teaching all social studies classes at the middle school level here at TYIS and will also be involved with reading classes and the “Core Values” character education program along with Mr. Serpico and Ms. Rachel.

The 7th Grade Social Studies curriculum will focus on the middle period of world history, building upon the foundation of ancient world history they studied in 6th Grade. In 8th Grade, students will continue to learn about world regions in greater detail as they progress into the Modern Era. Alongside the core history content, we will also delve into topics such as physical and human geography and current events. My foremost goal is to facilitate students in clearly understanding the link between the past and the present and to help everyone here at TYIS grow as informed global citizens.

I look forward to learning together! Let’s have a great year.

– Mr. Gossel
